AND ALL THE ANIMALS ARE SCREAMING: AND THIS TITLE CAN NO LONGER SAVE THE WORLD (monkey gone to heaven) — a requiem-manifesto of extinction, by Thomas Köck

Photography: Boryana Pandova

VISUAL ENVIRONMENT
2024
Toplocentrala RCCA, Hall 1, Sofia

A performance after the play by Thomas Köck, directed by Mariy Rosen. Premiere 12 January 2024; further performances on 1 June and 12 November 2024. Duration 80 minutes.

Thomas Köck writes a prophecy of extinction. It follows our traces into the future while at the same time turning back to those same traces in the past. It looks for the perspective of everything in the world that can exist and go on working without knowing us and without needing us. The author draws us into a stream of memories — as quiet as it is deafening — in which hundreds of extinct animal species pass by. Extinct, or rather killed off. Chiefly because Europeans set out in search of land, resources and entertainment on the neighbouring continents.

Synopsis — Toplocentrala RCCA (translated from the Bulgarian)

Sapromat created the visual environment of the performance. The stage is largely empty; into it intervene a few vivid sculptural and theatrical figures in overscaled costumes. The costumes of the chorus are pared down and make the performers uniform, so that they read as one harmonious group. Light works as a visual score, giving the action its rhythm. The digital element is live video of the audience: through visual-programming tools each person in the auditorium disappears from the image in turn — an empty seat appears in their place — in parallel with the recitation of extinct animal species.
